Silver Ferns begin Quad Series this weekend

From Morning Report, 8:52 am on 14 January 2022

The Silver Ferns coach Dame Noeline Taurua plans to throw her inexperienced shooters in the deep end in the Quad Series and she's confident they'll swim rather than sink.

The series, which involves hosts England, Australia and South Africa, starts this weekend, with New Zealand's first game against Australia on Sunday morning.

Of the four shooters, Maia Wilson has 24 caps but Grace Nweke and Tiana Metuarau have just three tests between them and Filda Vui is yet to debut.

The series will give all four teams a chance to measure their progress ahead of July's Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The Silver Ferns haven't played Australia or South Africa in more than a year due to the Covid pandemic, while they lost a series to England in Aotearoa last September.

Taurua told sports reporter Joe Porter her young shooters are confident and "fearless" and she says there's no better way to test their mettle than against the best sides in the world.
