Covid-19: Māori health authority on government response

From Morning Report, 8:11 am on 21 December 2021

The Waitangi Tribunal's scathing has concluded the government's Covid-19 response and vaccine rollout put Māori at risk.

The Tribunal says Cabinet's decision to go against official advice and not prioritise Māori in the vaccine rollout breached the Treaty principles of active protection and equity.

The Māori Council and other senior leaders challenged the Crown's Covid-19 response at the Waitangi Tribunal.

The Tribunal also found the rapid change to the traffic light system put Māori in danger because of their lower vaccination rates.

It says this also put Māori health providers under extreme pressure - pressure created by a delayed rollout, and years of chronic underfunding.

The newly appointed chief executive of the interim Māori Health Authority, Riana Manuel, has previously been working with the Hauraki Primary Health Organisation.

She spoke to Corin Dann.
