Covid-19: South Africa cases double in a week

From Morning Report, 7:24 am on 10 December 2021

Covid-19 cases have more than doubled in South Africa over the last week as the omicron variant spreads.

The World Health Organisation said the omicron variant is the dominant strain circulating in the country. However, research from the country also finds it might not be as severe as other strains.

South Africa and Botswana, which both detected the variant early on last month, account for 62 percent of Omicron cases reported as of 2 December.
