Lake Alice: Campaigner disappointed Dr Leeks not charged

From Morning Report, 6:18 am on 9 December 2021

A man who has campaigned on behalf of Lake Alice survivors feels police not charging the main culprit lets him off the hook.

An 89-year-old former staff member is facing charges of ill-treatment involving children and young people and will appear in the Whanganui District Court next Tuesday.

However, police found sufficient evidence to charge two other former staff members, including psychiatrist, 92-year-old Dr Selwyn Leeks, but say both are medically unfit to stand trial.

Dr Oliver Sutherland spent many years advocating on behalf of children in state care including those at the Psychaitric Hospital in the 1970s.

He says one person before the court is a small vindication.
