Harakeke flax mats to suppress weeds trialled in Lake Rotoiti

The trust in charge of Te Arawa's fourteen lakes is using a combination of traditional Māori knowledge and environmental science to combat lake weed and improve water quality.

Te Arawa Lakes Trust is using uwhi, or harakeke flax mats, to suppress invasive weeds that are displacing 15 native species in the Rotorua lakes.

Reporter Leah Tebbutt was at Lake Rotoiti for the blessing that started the project.
