Solomon Islands asks for assistance from NZ

From Morning Report, 7:52 am on 1 December 2021

Officials are urgently considering a formal request from Solomon Islands for assistance from New Zealand.

Days of violent unrest have rocked the Solomons capital, Honiara.

The Foreign Affairs Minister, Nanaia Mahuta, spoke with her Solomon Islands counterpart, Jeremiah Manele, last night.

Her ministry describes the unrest as deeply concerning and says the high commission in Honiara is monitoring the situation. Australia, Papua New Guinea and Fiji have already deployed peacekeepers.

Stuff is reporting that some New Zealand troops have been told to assemble at the Linton army base in case of deployment.

RNZ Solomon Islands correspondent Georgina Kekea spoke to Corin Dann.
