Slip destroys rail line and sacred Māori whenua

A huge slip along the mothballed rail line between Gisborne and Wairoa has destroyed sacred Māori whenua and dashed hopes of the railway being reinstated.

The slip has come after recent flooding, and scientists say it is the biggest they have seen in years - on the same scale as those witnessed after the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake.
