Kāinga Ora policy costing taxpayer thousands in payouts

Kāinga Ora's refusal to evict tenants, no matter how appallingly they behave, is costing the taxpayer thousands of dollars in compensation.

Tenants, terrorised by their neighbours, have been awarded the cash as the state landlord juggles its 'sustaining tenancies' policy with obligations to make sure tenants don't harm the lives of others.

In some cases, the Tenancy tribunal has ordered Kāinga Ora to pay out thousands of dollars to people worst affected by unruly neighbours.
