Covid-19: Cafe owner on operating after traffic light system begins

From Morning Report, 7:12 am on 24 November 2021

An Auckland business owner says he is still grappling with their responsibilities for the vaccination mandate ahead of the 3 December deadline for staff to receive their first jab.

The mandate covers hospitality, events, gyms, churches, and other 'close proximity' businesses.

Morningside's Crave Cafe co-owner Nigel Cottle told the programme the process is tricky to negotiate and he has had issues downloading the vaccination verification app.

He said while they knew the mandate was coming, details on the process for dealing with staff who are vaccine hesitant has only just been released.

One staff member at the cafe won't be vaccinated, and Cottle said it has been hard to work out what to do next with them.

"We know what the outcome is, there's going to be this timeframe at which we will no longer be able to employ you [the unvaccinated staff member], but the process and the technical conduct and employment law that sits around that has only just been released. So, it's really quick how that's gone on.

"It would be nice if we could have had some of those details a few weeks ago, so we could have got our preparations right."
