Covid-19: Government should consider holding off on restrictions easing

From Morning Report, 6:09 am on 8 November 2021

The government is being told to hold off on its plans to let Aucklanders hit the shops from Wednesday, after record Covid-19 case numbers at the weekend.

Cabinet will decide this afternoon whether to go ahead with a plan to allow shops to open and outdoor gathering numbers to increase from Wednesday.

Experts say it's not the right time, because the case numbers are on the rise and could get worse.

There were a record 200 new cases on Saturday.

Data modeler Shaun Hendy told RNZ health correspondent Rowan Quinn decisions to ease restrictions earlier in the outbreak have already had an impact.
