Love it or loathe it, the long-tailed bat was awarded Bird of the Year on Monday - but now another bat has flapped out of the shadows.
The lesser short-tailed bat is an ancient species unique to New Zealand. Unlike most bats, short-tailed bats forage for food on the ground - scurrying around like rodents.
Science communicator Terry Thomsen wants the elusive bat to receive more recognition.
