The Principals Association says some secondary schools in low vaccination areas will not be opening to students this week.
Senior secondary school students in Auckland and much of Waikato are going back to school today.
In Auckland, most senior students will be back in the classroom for the first time since mid-August.
However, Auckland Secondary Schools Principals Association president Steven Hargreaves, also a principal himself, told Morning Report schools are being cautious.
"There are about one or two schools that are in that situation, low levels of vaccination, highly anxious community, and they aren't bringing all their students back in. I think in a couple of cases they're not bringing any back."
Hargreaves said his school will be opening with precautions in place.
"I'm probably in the lucky position that I'm in a highly vaccinated community.
But all schools that welcome students back will have students wearing masks, with staff returning a negative test before they come on campus. You know, we've got the ventilation to help mitigate things."
He said was excited to see students come back in through the doors.
