Covid-19: Fury at Level 3 party on Auckland's North Shore

From Morning Report, 7:21 am on 18 October 2021

An Auckland councillor says weekend partygoers were only thinking about themselves with a gathering that has infuriated people.

Footage has been circulating on social media of the event, which was attended by dozens of young adults who appear to be flouting Covid-19 restrictions.

Albany Ward councillor John Watson told Morning Report that what happened was summed up by some of those attending.

"One of the party goers themselves on one of the social media platforms described their behaviour as selfish and stupid, and I think that's a pretty good description of it, in light of the sacrifice everyone has been making, not least of which on the North Shore where people have been very compliant and have really gone out of their way to do the right thing.

"This is a bit of a one fingered salute to the community as a whole."

Watson said the community was feeling fear and anger since news of the party broke on Sunday morning.

"They're concerned in the first instance that this has happened, it's potentially as a super spreader event.

"Secondly, they're really annoyed that people will be as thoughtless and really stupid to do something like this at this stage."

He said the expectation among locals will be that police will identify offenders and take action.
