Covid-19: Northland couple stressed after being at same hotel as case

From Morning Report, 6:07 am on 12 October 2021

A Northland couple who were at a location of interest at the same time as a woman who tested positive for Covid-19 say the woman's actions are causing stress for the community.

The woman, who tested positive, is now in quarantine in Auckland but is refusing to co-operate and reveal where she travelled, and whom she came into contact with.

Her travel companion went into hiding after travelling around Northland with the woman has been found by police.

She was located at a west Auckland house and taken into custody under section 70 of the Health Act She's being moved into an MIQ hotel.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is furious.

"This is an extraordinary set of circumstances where we have someone who may or may not be Covid positive, who has traveled with an individual and they are refusing to cooperate," she said.

"I mean, it is beyond irresponsible, it's dangerous."

The case has also infuriated locals including this Northland couple who celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary at the same Northland hotel the Covid-19 case visited on the same night.

They're shocked they still haven't been told anything from officials.

The pair signed in on the Covid-19 tracer app as they went into - the Comfort Hotel Flames in Onerahi - which then became a location of interest.

They told political reporter Anneke Smith Northlanders are seething the two women have not been cooperating.

"There's a lot of anxiety within their community, not knowing not knowing where she's been, who she's been in contact with."

The one of the pair said if she had a message for the women it would be to be more open about what they had done.

"Start cooperating because you're putting a lot of people's lives at risk. elderly, the young, let alone their own family, they're causing so much stress."

Her partner has nothing to say for the women though.

"I wouldn't say that to them," he said.

"I would say to the authority, they need to give to them the biggest punishment you can give them. They need to be made an example."

The pair have since been tested for Covid-19 and with one negative result and the second outstanding.
