Covid-19: Northland case visit driving locals to get tests and vaccines

From Morning Report, 7:49 am on 11 October 2021

Northland's Covid-19 response has had a shot of interest after a visit to the region from a positive case.

Ngāti Hine Health Trust says there was a strong surge of Covid-19 vaccinations in Northland over weekend, particularly for Māori.

The region has some of the lowest vaccination levels in this country.

The trust's chief executive Geoff Milner said there were big turnouts in Whangārei, Kaikohe and Paihia at both vaccination and testing centres.

He told Morning Report the weather was wonderful for a surge in vaccination and testing, and there was extra concern in the community due to the number of locations of interest.

"What was particularly encouraging was to see the strong Māori turnout and a large number of first time vaccinations.

"That [the case visit] is not necessarily the way Tai Tokerau needs our community to step forward, but that's an inevitable result of the news over the week."

Ngāti Hine Health Trust will be providing mobile vaccinations in the region next week.
