Court temporarily blocks Texas abortion ban

A federal judge has temporarily blocked a near-total ban on abortion in Texas.

Texas wants to prohibit people from obtaining an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy.

The action by US District Judge Robert Pitman in Austin prevents the state from enforcing the Republican-backed law, while litigation over its legality continues.

Professor Mary Ziegler from Florida State University College of Law specialises in the legal history of reproduction, family, sexuality, and the constitution.
