Tauranga remembers Rena 10 years on

From Morning Report, 7:56 am on 5 October 2021

Ten years ago today, in the early hours of the morning, New Zealand's worst maritime environmental disaster struck.

The Rena, a container ship, found itself stuck atop of Ōtāiti, the Astrolab Reef in the Bay of Plenty while approaching the Tauranga Harbour.

It resulted in the second most costly salvage effort in the world at $700 million.

Leah Tebbutt reports.
