Health practicioners lose High Court abortion case

From Morning Report, 8:28 am on 27 September 2021

A group of health practitioners who conscientiously objected to abortion have lost a case in the High Court.

A requirement in the Abortion Legislation Act 2020 states a practitioner who objects to abortion needs to refer the patient to a doctor who can help them.

The Health Professionals' Alliance members were opposed to abortion on moral or religious grounds, and sought a declaration that this law interferes with the Bill of Rights Act.

ALRANZ Abortion Rights Aotearoa president Terry Bellamak was at the hearing.

She spoke to Susie Ferguson.
