German voters head to the polls to find replacement for Angela Merkel

From Morning Report, 6:20 am on 24 September 2021

Voters go to the polls in Germany this weekend to elect their next government and choose who will succeed the long-serving Angela Merkel as chancellor.

For millions of younger voters, Merkel is the only leader that they have ever known, with 16 years in the top job.

She has handed leadership of the centre-right Christian Democratic Union party to Armin Laschet but he's trailing in the latest poll behind Olaf Scholz, the head of the centre-left Social Democrats.

The Green Party has grown to the point they're set to play a key role in any coalition governement.
