Motorhome and horsetruck owners are demanding the Transport Agency drop a clampdown that is forcing vehicles off the road.
Waka Kotahi has targeted structural modifications that allow drivers to crawl or walk between the cab and rear of the vehicle.
But the safety checks need a specialist engineer sign off that is both expensive and hard to find.
NZTA is promising a solution within a fortnight.
