Student opens fire at Russian university

From Morning Report, 6:15 am on 21 September 2021

A student armed with a hunting rifle has opened fire at a university in the Russian city of Perm, killing at least eight people and wounding many others.

Panicked students leapt from first-floor windows to escape Perm State University while others built barricades out of chairs to slow the shooter, who was eventually wounded and apprehended by police.

This all unfolded on a day that President Vladimir Putin's United Russia party won an emphatic majority following a parliamentary election that opponents said was marred by large-scale fraud.
