Covid-19: Victoria ditches elimination strategy

From Morning Report, 8:39 am on 2 September 2021

Victoria has ditched its Covid-19 elimination strategy as the way out of lockdown, and is instead casting its eye on vaccinations.

The majority of the state's restrictions will stay in place until 70 percent of eligible Victorians have received their first dose of vaccine.

Wednesday was a sobering day for Victorians - 120 community cases - the first time daily cases have hit triple digits in a year.

The state has also recorded its first Covid-19-related deaths this year - a woman in her 40s and another woman in her 60s.

University of Melbourne epidemiologist Professor Tony Blakely spoke to Susie Ferguson.
