Nearly a third of tree species almost extinct - report

From Morning Report, 6:14 am on 2 September 2021

Nearly a third of the world's tree species are at the brink of extinction, a new report warns.

The British charity Botanic Gardens Conservation International, which published the report, says more than 17,000 types of tree are at risk.

That's twice the number of threatened mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles combined.

The findings drew on the input of 500 experts around the world, over the span of five years.

Botanic Gardens Conservation International head of conservation Dr Malin Rivers spoke to Corin Dann.
