Covid-19: Parliament return not responsible - Prime Minister

From Morning Report, 7:23 am on 31 August 2021

A scaled-back socially-distanced Parliament will resume sitting in person today after plans for a virtual option were rejected by Opposition parties.

Parliament was suspended last week on the advice of the Director-General of Health, who warned a large indoor gathering and MPs travelling to the Capital poses a health risk.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told Morning Report she doesn't think the return is responsible, but it was either go back or suspend Parliament again.

"I didn't want to suspend Parliament again but nor did I agree with the fact that there was a problem with what we presented."

Ardern said ultimately going back was a worse option for the Opposition as it meant only a small number of government ministers would be available.

"We will be attending.

"We only have five in total that we will be providing from the government, it means unfortunately the opposition won't actually have access to all ministers, only those who have been here for the duration of alert level 4."
