Petition asks govt to increase Afghan refugee number

From Morning Report, 8:17 am on 26 August 2021

More than 10,000 people have signed a petition asking the Government to increase the numbers of refugees being evacuated from Afghanistan.

The joint petition by Amnesty International, Oxfam and Action Station highlights the grave concerns they have for civil, women's rights advocates, journalists and researchers over there.

New Zealand has until 31 August to get people out of the country, in an increasingly dangerous situation.

Amnesty International Aotearoa Campaigns Director Lisa Woods is presenting the petition - via Zoom - later today to Golriz Ghahraman.

She spoke to Susie Ferguson.
