Converse removes environmental claims from murals

From Morning Report, 8:45 am on 5 August 2021

The shoe brand Converse has quietly removed any reference to the environmental impact of its global public art campaign from its website after being accused of greenwashing.

Converse had been claiming murals it had commissioned around the world, using special photocatalytic paints, were the equivalent of planting more than 9000 trees.

Reporter Ben Strang revealed last month that the paint used in the murals was actually a net emitter of carbon, and scientists felt the claims were misleading.

He spoke to Susie Ferguson.
