Defence overdue for audit of hazardous materials management

The Defence Ministry is years overdue for an audit of how the military's controls hazardous materials such as rocket fuel and old ammunition.

The audits are required by law and the ministry says they take place about every three years.

But that last one was done five years ago - it found shortcomings and shortcuts, such as staff not tracking some of the most highly hazardous substances, and "poor" or ignored risk management.
