Climate change needs to be depoliticised - expert

The Climate Change Research Institute is upset the fight against climate change is so entangled with politics there is no cross parliament plan.

New Zealand is currently on track to import more coal this year than any other year.

In the first three months of the year coal has accounted for more than 10 percent of the country's entire electricity generation.

This is due to low hydropower and low gas supply, meaning coal's a backstop to keep the lights on - but it's also easily the most carbon intensive fuel.

Victoria University Professor Dave Frame told reporter Jordan Bond our climate vision needs to be stronger - and bipartisan.
