Decision to reduce seats at Christchurch stadium criticised

From Morning Report, 7:45 am on 23 July 2021

Christchurch's decision to cut the capacity of its new stadium is being labelled as one the city will come to regret.

The city council voted yesterday to reduce the number of seats in the arena from 30,000 to 25,000 in an attempt to stop an $88 million budget blow out.

Among the reasons for the ballooning costs is the rising price of steel and shipping since the outbreak of Covid-19.

The deputy mayor Andrew Turner says the city can't afford the extra money, but critics say that's short-sighted.
