Prosecution, defence give closing arguments in Epiha trial

From Morning Report, 6:18 am on 23 July 2021

The high profile trial of police killer Eli Epiha is coming to a close. Epiha admits murdering Constable Matthew Hunt in Auckland in June last year but denies the attempted murder of Constable David Goldfinch.

He shot at the officers after fleeing a routine traffic stop in Massey and crashing.

The judge is expected to sum up for the jury today in the High Court in Auckland. They've heard heard closing arguments from the defence and prosecution.

Crown prosecutor Brian Dickey told the court Epiha was intent on killing officers that day.

Epiha's lawyer Mark Edgar told the jury his client certainly didn't get out of bed intending to hurt police officers.

He says Epiha was on his way to brandish the firearms at gang members, to protect his family.

Edgar says it would be easy to empathise with Goldfinch, who believed he was running for his life, when there's no evidence Epiha chased Goldfinch across the road.
