Government orders review into asylum seeker treatment

The government has ordered a review of how asylum seekers are treated when they arrive in New Zealand and whether it meets its human rights obligations.

The move is being hailed as a breakthrough by Amnesty International Aotearoa, which for years has highlighted injustices for migrants when they first arrive.

It produced a report in May which focused on the number of asylum seekers being detained alongside criminals despite not committing any offence.

The organisation's executive director Meg de Ronde spoke to Guyon Espiner.
