North Otago rugby game sets possible record for run time

From Morning Report, 8:58 am on 21 July 2021

A club rugby game in North Otago turned into the ultimate war of attrition, and possibly set a record for our national sport.

The Presidents grade final between Union and Kurow at the tiny settlement of Ngapara on Saturday lasted 113 minutes after the teams couldn't be separated through 70 minutes of regular time and a further 20 minutes of extra time.

It took a further 23 minutes of golden point action to find the winner - of what is believed to be the longest official game ever played in New Zealand.

Union team coach Peter Stackhouse spoke to Corin Dann.
