Dirty coal imports top a million tonnes

From Morning Report, 7:09 am on 14 July 2021

In the same year that the government declared a climate emergency, imports of dirty coal from Indonesia topped a million tonnes.

That's only the second time it's happened in two decades.

Imports of the low-grade black stuff were six times bigger in 2020 than in 2016.

The coal purchases were pumped up to keep the lights on, as gas fields, hydro and wind turbines failed to meet demand.
