Covid-19: Training for new vaccinators escalated

From Morning Report, 8:42 am on 13 July 2021

Training is being escalated for a new class of Covid-19 vaccinator it's hoped will both bolster numbers and reach more communties.

Non-medical health workers, social workers and support workers are being trained to give injections under the supervision of doctors or nurses.

It's hoped some will be from groups or communities underepresented by the current vaccinators.

They have to do an online course, pass an exam, and then do a practical session where they practice injecting fake arms.

Turuki Healthcare in Mangere is a already a vaccination centre but had several non medical staff doing a practical session yesterday.

Health correspondent Rowan Quinn spoke to centre manager - and new trainee - Rene Muru-Barnard there.
