Covid-19: New Zealander says computer programme can cheat MIQ system

From Morning Report, 6:44 am on 9 July 2021

A New Zealander who tried in vain for three weeks to book a room in MIQ has admitted using what he calls unethical methods to successfully cheat the system.

Chris Ruscoe says for those in the know a computer programming code is easily available online and saves crucial time in a booking system that's always in heavy demand - in his case he got a room in five minutes.

He told reporter Jordan Bond that the script or programme constantly refreshes and scans the MIQ website for any available spots, alerts you when there is one, and autofills the fields including your name and details.

The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment which runs MIQ told RNZ use of software to circumvent the system is a breach of the terms, and something it takes very seriously.

It's caught and stopped a lot of "bots", or autonomous programme, but can only "discourage" using the script.

It calls call them "notification services" and says they're available publicly.
