Young people on superannuation debate

From Morning Report, 8:21 am on 7 July 2021

Treasury has reignited the superannuation debate with its warning that Government debt will soar by hundreds of billions of dollars as more and more New Zealanders reach retirement age.

Twenty-six per cent of the population is projected to be over sixty-five years old by 2060, compared to the current figure of 16 percent.

Treasury forecasts spending on superannuation would grow from five percent of GDP to seven point six percent of GDP in forty years.

Will the next generation be prepared to stump up with that money and wait longer to retire?

Ashok Jacob of Renters United and Victoria University Students Association president Michael Turnbull spoke to Corin Dann.
