Covid-19: UK to lift all restrictions from 19 July

From Morning Report, 6:41 am on 6 July 2021

The UK Prime Minister says he plans to lift England's Covid-19 restrictions on 19 July, returning the country to a level of normalcy.

Boris Johnson made the announcement at 4am NZT, saying from that date, people will be encouraged to make their own informed choices on how to manage the virus, including whether to wear a mask.

All businesses will be allowed to reopen and gathering limits will be lifted despite a rise in the number of positive Covid-19 cases.

Johnson says with summer now underway and high vaccination numbers across the country, England is ready.

Johnson says a final decision on whether to lift the restrictions will be made at the start of next week.
