Global watchdog criticises police Financial Intelligence Unit

From Morning Report, 8:16 am on 11 June 2021

A global watchdog for money laundering and terrorist financing has found New Zealand's police do a good job of seizing proceeds of crime.

But it did find several shortcomings in their Financial Intelligence Unit, saying it could be more proactive and needs better analytical tools.

The unit played a key role in Operation Trojan Shield earlier this week, which resulted in the arrests of 35 people, who have been charged with more than 900 offences.

Police reporter Ben Strang told me more about the report.
