Mayor John Carter on Significant Natural Areas

There will be a hikoi in Northland on Friday, where hundreds are expected at the Far North District Council office in Kaikohe in opposition to re-designating their whenua as Significant Natural Areas.

The Far North District Mayor says he is looking forward to working with iwi to find a solution for protecting local land.

On Wednesday, Minister James Shaw stepped in to halt proposed restrictions which would affect more than 280,000 hectares in Te Tai Tokerau.

The Far North District Council agreed to wait until a new National Policy Statement on Indigenous Biodiversity is implemented in July.
