Irish health service says cyber attack had 'devastating impact'

From Morning Report, 6:49 am on 4 June 2021

The head of the Irish health service has said that the "devastating impact" of a ransomware cyberattack on Irish hospitals "cannot be overstated".

That attack came just days before the one that left Waikato DHB hospitals in chaos last month.

Both attacks involved the use of Conti ransomware, and the hackers responsible have in both cases threatened to publish private patient data online if a ransom is not paid.

Irish Independent business editor Donal O'Donovan spoke to Philippa Tolley.
