The entire English language school sector could be forced to close by the end of the year.
Darren Conway from English New Zealand, which represents the largest language schools, says no new students are arriving and the schools cannot survive without more government support.
He told education correspondent John Gerriten its members are now down to their last few students when usually they would have thousands.
