Rio Tinto commitment to waste removal 'a welcome U-turn' - David Parker

Rio Tinto is now saying it will pay $4 million to get rid of all aluminium dross and ouvea premix from Mataura and other sites around Southland.

Both the government and the Environmental Defence Society say this is a welcome move.

However, there is still uncertainty about the removal of toxic spent liner waste which will cost more than $200 million.

Environment Minister David Parker spoke to Corin Dann.
