Cycling activist overjoyed by funding turnaround

Cyclists in Wellington are set to get safe cycleways throughout the city after a last-minute turnaround by councillors.

Mayor Andy Foster proposed an amendment to fast-track temporary cycleways at a cost of $52 million extra - but that was trumped by Councillor Tamatha Paul.

She retabled a $226 million plan rejected at an earlier stage, and the amendment was passed with 11 in favour and only three against.

Cycling Action Network spokesperson Patrick Morgan was overjoyed at the proposal to build and improve cycleways around the city.
