Waikato DHB cyber attack: Widespread alarm over possible data leak

From Morning Report, 7:08 am on 26 May 2021

There's widespread alarm about what will become of highly sensitive patient and staff information that hackers claim to have stolen from Waikato DHB.

Hospitals in the region have been crippled for more than week because of a ransomware attack.

Media organisations have been sent an email from a group claiming responsibility. It contains a link to what appears to be scores of private patient and staff data.

RNZ is not publishing the data and has referred the email to the police.

Health Minister Andrew Little is refusing to front, only issuing a statement that's he's been in touch with the Waikato DHB about any assistance it requires.

Earlier this week he admitted patient information may have been stolen from the system.
