'Zombie fires' getting more frequent, scientists warn

Scientists are warning that 'zombie fires' are becoming more frequent as global temperatures rise.

Zombie fires are wildfires that smoulder underground for months, even in freezing cold conditions, and later reignite.

A study published this month finds that the increasingly hotter summers of the Arctic region, combined with its abundance of carbon-rich peat soil, offer the right conditions for the fires.

Study's co-author and University of Amsterdam associate professor Sander Veraverbeke spoke to Susie Ferguson.
