Countdown stabbing: Police full of praise for bystanders

Dunedin police are full of praise for the Countdown staff and customers who leapt on and restrained a man who was carrying out a knife attack in a central Dunedin supermarket.

Police have called them heroes saying their actions prevented more people getting hurt.

A man is expected to appear in court today following the stabbings yesterday afternoon.

Three people were taken to hospital in a critical condition and underwent surgery last night. A fourth person suffered moderate injuries.

An update on their condition is expected to be released on Tuesday morning.

The attack has left many people in Dunedin in shock.
