Countdown stabbing: Attacker to appear in court

From Morning Report, 6:08 am on 11 May 2021

A man is expected to appear in court today following the stabbing of four people in a Dunedin supermarket on Monday afternoon.

Three people were taken to hospital in a critical condition and underwent surgery last night. A fourth person suffered moderate injuries.

The condition of those still in hospital has not yet been released. Dunedin police are full of praise for the bystanders who stopped the Countdown attacker, describing them as heroes who prevented more people getting hurt.

The supermarket is next door to the police station and officers were on the scene within minutes. They found four victims, and a man who had been detained by members of the public.

The Southern District Commander Superintendent Paul Basham told Monday night's news conference they received the first of many calls reporting the attack just before 2.30pm on Monday afternoon.
