A Māori health leader says more investment in cancer screening is needed to improve equity.

The government announced yesterday that it's committing $53 million towards making cervical cancer self-testing screening kits available in two years' time.

Ministry of Health figures show wahine Māori are falling behind non-Māori in screening rates, with an average of 62 percent of Māori being screened compared with 78 percent of non-Māori.

RNZ reporter Adam Jacobson spoke to National Māori Cancer Leadership Group chairperson Doctor Nina Scott.
