Indian Premier League: Competition suspended indefinitely, foreign players expected to leave country

From Morning Report, 7:45 am on 5 May 2021

The IPL has been suspended indefinitely and a senior cricket journalist in the country expects foreign players - including a number of New Zealanders - will leave the country soon.

Several positive Covid-19 cases across franchises over the last couple of days has prompted the suspension, although organisers insist they want the tournament to restart.

However, those reports come amidst a message from India's cricket board that they'll ensure a safe exit for all participants from a country which is being ravaged by the pandemic.

Before the suspension was announced, New Zealand Cricket last night said it was in close contact with the governing cricket boards in India and England to discuss options.

New Zealand is due to play a Test series in England next month, followed by the World Test championship final against India in Southampton.

Sharda Ugra, the senior editor at ESPN Cricinfo, told Corin Dann the IPL's suspension had a feeling of inevitability.
