Ruapehu Mayor on rickety bridge affecting vegetable growers

A century-old wooden bridge full of holes that carries thousands of tonnes of the country's potatoes and carrots is jeopardising truckers' safety and farmers' livelihoods.

But repairing or replacing the bridge on a back road on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu is now less certain because of funding changes.

Ruapehu District is home to more than 300 ageing bridges, built from the 1920s to the 1940s, which are at the end of their lives.
